Preparing Students for College Using SRV within the IDEA Framework

This presentation examines the use of Social Role Valorization (SRV) theory in helping high school students with intellectual disabilities (ID) transition successfully to postsecondary education and explore how SRV aligns with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), particularly in transition planning for students with ID as they move from high school to college.  Using examples of how SRV theory enhances transition planning under IDEA, participants will learn how schools can promote high expectations for students with ID by involving them in rigorous academics, leadership roles, and extracurricular activities where students are seen as capable learners and contributors and the added benefit of collaboration between families, schools, and colleges in supporting the transition. By combining SRV theory with IDEA’s transition guidelines, schools can better prepare students with intellectual disabilities for college. Through enhanced social roles, individualized planning, and valued contributions, students with ID can experience greater inclusion and thrive in postsecondary education.
